Southeast Portland Green Streets Update

green street facility with sign about plantingIt’s hard to believe we last posted on the Division Streetscape and Tabor to the River projects over eight months ago.

Since then, crews have been busy on SE Division Street, constructing the 64 green street facilities, repairing and improving old sewers, and making transportation improvements.  The Division Streetscape Project is a combined effort between Environmental Services and Portland Bureau of Transportation.

Environmental Services is also building 13 more green street facilities nearby, at SE Ivon and 41st and near SE Madison and 57th. In addition, two older facilities at SE Grant and 29th are being retrofitted.  Learn more about that project here.

Thanks to everyone who lives, works, and travels through the Division Streetscape area for your continued patience with this major construction!  A more safe and beautiful street with modern sewer and stormwater infrastructure will be the result.

  • Construction on Ivon-Madison is expected to be complete this month.
  • Construction on Division Street continues through the summer and fall.
  • Crews will completely repave Division Street from SE 11th to SE Cesar Chavez Boulevard later this summer.
  • The finishing touches will include plants and public art installation.  The green street facilities will be planted this fall, after repaving is complete and in time for fall rain.

All of these projects are part of the part of the Tabor to the River Program.  When the Division Street and Ivon-Madison green street facilities are complete, there will be a total of 215 completed green streets in the Tabor to the River area, keeping millions of gallons of stormwater runoff out of sewer pipes and adding nature to the busy Division Street corridor.

What’s next for Tabor to the River? There are more green streets in design now for the Brooklyn neighborhood (the Lower Powell Sewer and Green Street Project). The project will replace and repair about 4,000 feet of pipe, construct about 20 green street facilities to keep stormwater out of sewers, and plant trees to absorb rain and reduce runoff.
