(September 25, 2013) – Summer’s not really over: The last Sunday Parkways of the season is this Sunday, September 29 in Southwest Portland, offering participants a day of traffic-free activity and entertainment. TheSouthwest Portlandevent is the finale to this year’s highly popular series. It is the only Sunday Parkways to offer two routes, one designated especially for walking to showcase the area’s urban trail network.
This Sunday’s event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers:
- A 4.5 mile walking loop along city streets and along the beautiful trails of Stephens Creek Natural Area and Gabriel Park, showcasing portions ofSouthwest Portland’s urban trail system.
- A 6 mile round trip route along traffic-free city streets for bicycling, walking, strolling and rolling that connects Gabriel Park,Multnomah Village, a Troy Street Marketplace and the Hillsdale Shopping Center.
Music, vendors and activities are located in the parks and along the route. Motorized vehicles are allowed to pass through the route at designated crossings and are allowed on the route for resident and emergency access.
The popular Sunday Parkways series is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with its many community partners, including presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, and champion sponsors Universal Cycles, and Portland Parks & Recreation, Metro, Bike Gallery, Clif Kid and the NW Health Foundation. The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and Food Front areSouthwest Portlandevent sponsors.
Sunday Parkways are conducted each month from May to September in various neighborhoods to promote healthy active living by opening the city’s largest public space – our streets – to walk, bike, roll and enjoy active transportation and entertainment. The events foster civic pride by connecting citizens with each other and with local businesses that participate as vendors and sponsors.
