Grinding and paving project on Northeast Sandy Boulevard begins April 2
(Portland, Ore.) – The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that a street grinding and paving project on Northeast Sandy Boulevard will reduce the street from four travel lanes to two travel lanes with one lane open in each direction all hours and all days for eleven weeks. The 35-block road rehabilitation project stretches from Northeast 82nd Avenue to 47th Avenue and includes measures to accommodate both vehicular and non-vehicular users of the street. The public is advised to expect delays, travel cautiously and observe all work zone signage.
The construction plan will include six phases, each phase measuring 10 to 14 blocks in length and curbline to centerline in width. The contractor will be allowed to work on only half of the road at a time.
The first construction phase will begin Monday, April 2, at 7:00 A.M. when the two westbound lanes on Northeast Sandy Boulevard will be closed between Northeast 82nd and 72nd avenues. Two-way traffic will be maintained with one lane open in each direction. All side streets will be closed at Sandy Boulevard except for Northeast 77th Avenue. Parking will be removed within the work zone.
Transit users are advised that TriMet’s Line 12-Sandy Boulevard may experience 10-15 minute delays during construction. For trip planning, visit www.TriMet.org for specifics on bus stop relocations within the work zone or call 503-238-RIDE. The goal will be to have one bus stop at the midpoint of the work zone to reduce long walking distances between stops.
Road rehabilitation will involve grinding out the old existing asphalt pavement and replacing it with new pavement from curb to curb. Other street work will include rebuilding curb ramps to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards, modernizing existing traffic signal equipment and complying with stormwater quality requirements. Aging underground sewers will also be replaced in conjunction with the road work to minimize the need for future repairs under the new asphalt.
Northeast Sandy Boulevard is a major connection in Northeast Portland, with a diverse mix of land uses along the neighborhoods it connects. Cutting diagonally from Troutdale to Southeast 7th Avenue, historic Sandy Boulevard provided overland access to Native Americans and Oregon Trail immigrants. As the city’s population and traffic have increased, Sandy Boulevard has continued to play an important role in the city’s transportation network.
