News Release: Division Street streetscape improvements and sewer construction slated; 19 day closure begins Aug. 5, 2013

(PORTLAND,Ore.) – Sewer construction will close SE Division Street to through traffic between SE 26th Avenue and SE 29th Avenue for 19 days starting Monday, August 5, 2013 at 7:00 a.m.

Construction hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week, but Division Streetwill be closed between SE 26th and SE 29th avenues all hours and all days until construction is complete within 19 days. The Portland Noise Office granted a noise variance for nighttime construction on this project. The work will replace 80- to 100-year-old sewers to improve system reliability and protect public health.

During the closure, eastbound traffic will detour to SE Clinton Street and westbound traffic will detour to SE Grant Street.

Second Division Street Closure Coming August 24th

After sewer construction is complete on Division Streetbetween SE 26th and 29th avenues, construction will close another segment of SE Division Street between SE 33rd  and SE 37th avenues 24 hours a day, seven days a week for about seven days. Work on that segment will begin on Saturday, August 24, 2013.

During the closure on Division between SE 33rd and SE 37th avenues, traffic will be detoured onto SE Clinton Street (eastbound) andSE Grant Street (westbound). Eastbound traffic on SE Division Street will be temporarily detoured to SE  Woodward Street during the SE Portland Sunday Parkways event on Sunday, August 25.

The sewer construction is part of the Division Streetscape Project, a joint project between the bureaus of Environmental Services and Transportation to improve the sewer system, add new green stormwater management infrastructure, improve the streetscape and reconstruct streets on SE Division Street from SE 11th Avenue to SE Cesar Chavez Boulevard. Work on the Division Streetscape Project began in May 2013 and is scheduled to continue through fall 2014. For more information about the SE Division Streetscape Project, visit www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/division.

Work on Division From SE 60th to SE 80th

Additional work on SE Division in August from SE 60th to SE 80th will reconfigure the street from four lanes to three, add bicycle lanes in both directions and add a pedestrian crossing at SE 68th Avenue. Those improvements will involve lane closures but no street closures and are designed to improve safety along the thoroughfare, one of ten designed “High Crash Corridors” in the city. The traveling public is advised to follow signs and instruction of flaggers.

Coordinating SE Portland Construction Closures

The Streetscape Project and improvements on Division between SE 60th and SE 80th are two of several construction projects this summer in southeast Portland. Public agencies are working together to inform the public about closures and traffic disruptions and to minimize traffic impacts by preventing overlapping closures on major projects.

The Division Street closure follows the conclusion of closures of the SE 8th, 11th and12th avenuecrossings south ofDivision Streetfor the construction of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project, and the closure earlier this summer of a segment ofSE Cesar Chavez Boulevardfor sewer reconstruction, a project that concluded 10 days ahead of schedule.
