January 2016

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18, 2016, a few wise quotes from a great leader who was taken from us too soon:

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?”

We have several new books in the DEEP Library:

♥ Remarkable Oregon Women

♥ The Little Book of Leadership Development

♥ The New Jim Crow

♥ Portland in Three Centuries

♥ African Americans of Portland

♥ Just One of the Guys? Transgender Men and the Persistence of Gender Inequality

***Have a book that you’d like to donate that would fit in with our library? Let us know!***

Check out your books or DVDs here:  http://www.portlandoregon.gov/67392

Take a look at the list of books and DVD's that DEEP has acquired. Download list here. [updated January 14, 2016

Employees can borrow up to two items for a month.  There is the option to renew for another month.  Fill out the form below with the title of the book or DVD, and the author (so we can confirm what your selection is); or if it is a DVD, just type DVD or video in the author line.

Dr. James Yamazaki

The video of Dr. James Yamazaki is now available for viewing on our website at https://vimeo.com/deeportland.  Unfortunately, we did not have the capability to add captioning at this time, but we are exploring this option for future videos.

The soft spoken and very humble 99 year old, made the trip to Portland with his daughter on November 17, 2015 and spoke to a packed auditorium about his experience as the lead physician of the U.S. Atomic Bomb Medical Team assigned to Nagasaki to survey the effects of the bomb. DEEP has a copy of his book in the library, and it is already on its third check out by fellow employees.
