The following measure appeared on the Tuesday, May 15, 1984 Primary Election Ballot.
Charter Amendment Eliminating Masculine or Feminine Terms in City Charter
QUESTION: Shall the Portland City Charter be amended to eliminate terms in the City Charter which are masculine or feminine?
PURPOSE AND EXPLANATION OF CHARTER AMENDMENT: This Charter amendment would require that future amendments to the City Charter use terms which are neither masculine nor feminine. The City Auditor, with approval of the City Attorney, would be authorized to delete use of terms in the present City Charter which are masculine or feminine. Approval of this Charter amendment would not change any substantive provisions of the Charter, but would eliminate use of terms such as "he" or "she" when appropriate.
