On Wednesday, August 17, 2011, the Auditor received a prospective petition from Mary Nolan, who indicated that she would file for the office of Commissioner, Position No. 1, by perfected nominating petition for the May 2012 primary. The Elections Division approved the petition for circulation.

As an alternative method of filing as a candidate by declaration with filing fee, a candidate may file a nominating petition. A nominating petition shall contain no fewer than 100 original signatures of electors registered in the City of Portland.

The first date to file as a candidate, by nominating petition or declaration with fee, is September 8, 2011.
