Code violation response process
The chart below shows the typical response process when the Bureau receives a complaint. We respond to over 20,000 code complaints each year, and compliance is reached with well over 90 percent of the cases. To check the status of your complaint, check the complaint status online or call the responding bureau section.

Complaint Received/Complaint Case Opened |
Inspectors are usually assigned and respond to a complaint within a week of the initial report.
|
Inspection Violation Found |
Once a case is opened. BDS inspectors investigate reports of potential violations to determine if zoning, construction code, noise or dangerous building violations exist. If a violation is not found, the case is closed. If a violation is found, a compliance request letter is sent to the property owner.
|
Violation Letter |
When an inspection confirms a code violation, a violation letter will be sent to the property owner and occupant to correct the violation. Typically, thirty days are given to correct the cited violations. For noise cases, citations may be used to correct the violation.
|
Enforcement Action Taken |
If the violations are not corrected within the given deadlines, then enforcement action can be taken including: imposition of monthly enforcement penalties, a lien against the property, filing a compliant with the City's Code Hearings Officer or entering a stipulated agreement.
