Appeal Information Sheet
Appeal item 1
Code Section | 504.10 section 8, 505.5 section 8 |
---|---|
Requires | Exhaust fan operation shall be monitored in an approved location and shall initiate an audible or visual signal when the fan is not in operation. Please note that section 8 is written the same for both code sections. 504.10 is titled common exhaust systems for clothes dryers located in multistory structures. 505.5 is titled common exhaust systems for domestic kitchens located in multistory structures. |
Code Modification or Alternate Requested | The intent of the appeal is not to modify the current code or use an alternate. The intent of the appeal is to clarify the approved location written in the regulation requirement. The code sections were not enforced. The mechanical contractor reached out to the AHJ and the AHJ suggested submitting an appeal to clarify the approved location for exhaust fan monitoring. |
Proposed Design | The building owner and architect have provided input regarding the approved location via RFI response. Per RFI response #934. The building owner and architect have agreed that the approved location for fan monitoring can be at the roof level, at each individual fan. AHI intends to install a visual indicator (fan mounted light) that will be on when the fan is operational. The visual indicator will sense amperage at the motor via current transducer that will turn the light off when the fan is not operational. |
Reason for alternative | An alternate is not being requested, clarification only. The appeal will be submitted online. Attached you will find a M208 roof top plan. A copy of RFI#934 response, a diagram showing how the visual monitoring will be incorporated into each fan, and a PDF of the appeal application. |
