The Zoning Information Line (503-823-7526), which can also be reached via email using the BDS Web Mailbox or firstname.lastname@example.org, is a good resource for general zoning and property information or process related questions. It is not meant to answer multiple questions or provide detailed guidance in complex situations. When you call or email the Zoning Information Line, please provide the property address or tax account number and a phone number at which we can reach you. Please be as specific as you can about the zoning information you need. Planners strive to return calls the next business day.
When we receive your question via email, our preference is to call you back rather than respond via email. If you would prefer an email answer rather than a returned call, please state that preference in your email. We can answer general zoning questions about your site in an email, or answer process questions, but cannot give you land use determinations that are specific to your site. You won’t be able to reply to the email answer you receive to ask additional questions; the replies are directed back to the general Zoning Information Line and you will need to ask follow-up questions through a new email request.
For complex or multiple zoning questions, please visit us in person in the Development Services Center. Planners are on duty to answer your questions during regular business hours. There’s no fee for this service. If you want zoning questions about a specific site answered in writing, you may apply for an Early Assistance Zoning appointment, or a Zoning Confirmation Letter. These processes allow staff time to research the site, land use or permit history, and provide a detailed response to questions. Here are links to each process including applications forms:
