The City of Portland, Bureau of Development Services has scheduled its Spring 2016 Landlord Training Program dates and locations. Classes will be held May 10 at the Providence Portland Medical Center, May 14 and 21 at Multnomah University, and May 24 at Adventist Medical Center. Please check the Bureau’s Landlord Training Program website for registration and plan to attend this important opportunity to receive no cost training that will help you feel more confident in your ability to screen applicants, recognize signs of illegal activity, and take action or deal with problem tenant behaviors when they arise.
The Landlord Training class helps income property owners and managers build a foundation of partnership with their tenants and with city agencies, to create safe communities and residences. This program is provided through partnership and funding by the Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, Portland Housing Bureau, Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.
Classes provide current, effective information on property management. Topics covered in the 8hr training session include; property management to prevent crime or loss of investment, best practices in applicant screening, signs of dishonest applicants, rental agreements, crisis resolution/eviction, and partnering with police/crime prevention specialists/housing inspectors. Presentations are made by Housing Inspectors, Fire & Rescue Prevention Inspectors, and Crime Prevention Specialists. City staff are also available at the trainings to answer attendee’s questions.
This program has received overwhelming positive responses from attendees who have taken the course. Over 18,500 Portland-area owners and managers have attended these training classes representing over 383,000 rental units since the program began.
The classes are offered free of charge. Advanced registration is required. If you wish to purchase the course materials, there is a charge for the Landlord Training Manual and the Property Maintenance Regulations booklet. At the end of each session attendees are provided a certificate of attendance.
