The City of Portland, Bureau of Development Services is in the process of scheduling its Fall 2016 Landlord Training Program dates and locations. Classes will be held December 3rd and 10th at the Providence Portland Medical Center and December 6th and 9th at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. We are in the process of updating our Bureau’s Landlord Training Program website for registration. Please plan to attend this important opportunity to receive no cost training that will help you feel more confident in your ability to screen applicants, recognize signs of illegal activity, and take action or deal with problem tenant behaviors when they arise.
The Landlord Training class helps income property owners and managers build a foundation of partnership with their tenants and with city agencies, to create safe communities and residences. This program is provided through partnership and funding by the Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, Portland Housing Bureau, and Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.
Classes provide current, effective information on property management. Topics covered in the 8hr training session include; property management to prevent crime or loss of investment, best practices in applicant screening, signs of dishonest applicants, rental agreements, crisis resolution/eviction, and partnering with police/crime prevention specialists/housing inspectors. Presentations are made by Housing Inspectors and Fire & Rescue Prevention Inspectors. City staff are also available at the trainings to answer attendee’s questions.
This program has received overwhelming positive responses from attendees who have taken the course. Over 19,600 Portland-area owners and managers have attended these training classes representing over 400,000 rental units since the program began in 1989.
The classes are offered free of charge. Advanced registration is required. If you wish to purchase the course materials, there is a charge for the Landlord Training Manual and the Property Maintenance Regulations booklet. Also, other agencies provide resource materials and handouts for you to take with you. At the end of each session attendees are provided a certificate of attendance.
