Updated Policies on Permit Extensions, Abandonment and Expiration, and Reactivation Requests and New Online Requests
(Commercial, Residential, Site Development, Development Review, Major Projects, Zoning, Sign, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical Permits)

The program guide for policies on when permits may be extended, when they are abandoned or expire, and when they may be reactivated after expiration has been updated. The existing program guide was limited to policies regarding extension and expiration of permits. The updated guide includes policies on reactivation of permits after they have expired. The guide applies to Commercial Residential, Facilities, Site Development, Development Review, Major Projects, Zoning, Sign, Plumbing, Electrical, and Mechanical Permits.

Permit applications or issued permits expire 180 days after the last activity by the applicant; usually a substantive response to a checksheet for a permit under review, or an approved inspection of an issued permit. Extensions of permit applications or issued permits for up to an additional 180 days may be requested during this time. Permits that are inactive for more than 180 days are either abandoned or expired, depending if the permit has reached issued stage or not. Once a permit is abandoned or expired, a reactivation of the permit may be requested. Requests for reactivations of permits that have been abandoned or expired for more than 180 days are generally more difficult to grant.

The updated program guide may be found here.

Also, a system for submitting requests to extend or reactivate permits has been created. The online requests will be forwarded to the appropriate work group for evaluation and response. These links may be found under the Permits Tab on the BDS Website, or directly here. You can choose to use the online request, or continue to use e-mail or phone. Those contacts are listed toward the end of the program guide.
