Q: What if I do not know my subcontractors yet?

A: If you do not submit the mechanical, electrical, or plumbing applications with your building permit application. You will have to acquire the trade permits separately; either by permits online or over-the-counter at the Development Services Center.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The fees are determined by the valuation of the construction work to be performed. See fee schedule under "Building Permit Fee".

Q: How do I pay my fees?

A: Pay with cash, credit, or check at the cashier in the Development Services Center (first floor of 1900 SW 4th Ave, Portland, OR 97201).

Q: What are the minimum code requirements for bathroom fixture clearances?

Q: What are head height requirements for a new bathroom?

A: For flat ceilings, minimum head height must be 6ft 8in. For sloped ceilings, not more than 75% of the floor area of a bathroom is permitted to have a sloped ceiling less than 7ft, provided an area of 21in x 24in in front of toilet and sinks have a minimum height of 6ft 4in. An area of 24in by 30in in front of and inside a shower or tub shall have a minimum of 6ft 4in in height, measure from the standing surface of the fixture.

Q: What are ventilation requirements for bathrooms?

A: Mechanical ventilation is required for bathrooms with tub, shower or spa facilities and should be designed in accordance with M1507.4. Bathrooms without a tub, shower or spa facilities shall have a total glazing area of 3 sq ft, one half which must be operable. Glazing not required if mechanical ventilation and artificial light are provided.
