Salmon and Other Fish

Fifteen fish species found in Portland are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, thirteen of which are salmon and trout.

Environmental Services staff lead endangered species recovery efforts citywide. Salmon are highly sensitive to all components of watershed health (hydrology, habitat, water quality, and biological communities). Health, abundance, and productivity of salmon reflects many important urban watershed processes. They are an important barometer of how healthy our streams and rivers are. The Water Bureau also has a habitat conservation program, focused exclusively on the Bull Run Watershed, that includes protections for salmon.
