Wildlife in Portland

Portland is home to a surprising amount of wildlife for an urban area. Wildlife live in even the most developed areas by using back yards, street trees, utility poles, gardens and parks. Birds, fish and macroinvertebrates serve as indicators of riparian forest health.

One strategy of the Portland Watershed Management Plan is to enhance aquatic and terrestrial community habitat. Monitoring birds, fish, and macroinvertebrates directly supports Environmental Services' mission to promote healthy ecosystems in our watersheds. Data from the watershed monitoring efforts supports the Watershed Health Index, an at-a-glance measure of the state of our urban watersheds.

Go to the invasive species management pages for information about invasive species in Portland.
