Program History

Since its start in 1995 through to June 2019, CWSP has granted more than $1.6 million to 298 projects. Funds were matched by $5 million in community support through donations of services, materials, and volunteer time. More than 54,000 people donated 383,140 volunteer hours..

In 2010, CWSP received a request from Commissioner Dan Saltzman’s office to integrate a more purposeful equity component into the program. Now, an equity analysis of CWSP-funded projects is completed yearly, and progress is tracked. Other changes to increase equity included the two-step application process and questions that require applicants to consider how equity relates to the project. CWSP seeks to award grants in a manner that advances the City’s established equity goals, with regard to where projects are carried out and who they involve and benefit. We encourage projects that expand and diversify leadership and participation in watershed stewardship.

If you have questions about the grant program, past projects, or have an idea for a project of your own, contact the Stewardship Coordinator at 503-823-7917 or CommunityStewardship@portlandoregon.gov.
