What Trees Mean to Portlanders

Tree Program participants with a young native madroneBefore we knocked on their door, a third of the residents who planted with us had either never considered planting a street tree or didn’t know that they could. Those who had considered a street tree told us that it was just too expensive or they were uncertain about choosing the right tree for the right place.

Trees can sometimes seem like a secondary concern. Residents told us they worry about crime, safety, and meeting their basic needs. That’s why we were delighted to hear that people are also connecting trees with everyday aspects of their lives.

During the 2013-2014 planting season, residents told us their number one reason for planting street trees was to “improve the character of my neighborhood.” The second most common reason was the ease with which the Tree Program made planting a tree possible, simplifying the process and bringing a free tree to their door.
