This summer, Environmental Services installed a valve and underground vault near the intersection of SE 3rd Avenue and Alder Street. The equipment will reduce the rare build-up of air pressure in the public sewer system that can occur during intense rainstorms. This project will help to ensure the sewer system operates safely and efficiently.
The project was located near the busy intersection of SE 3rd and Alder. Construction began the week of June 26, and took about two weeks to complete. This included time to set up, install piping and structures, and then restore pavement disturbed during construction.
Crews worked at the manhole in the street and installed piping that connects to a new underground pressure valve and vault structure. There were temporary traffic restrictions, including reduced lanes and assistance from flaggers. Parking was temporarily removed around the work area during construction.
If you have questions or concerns about this project, please call or email:
Please include your name, property address, and project name (Alder Shaft) in your voicemail and email so we can provide you more details about what occurred in front of your property. Also, please write "Alder Shaft" in the subject line of your email.
Environmental Services maintains and improves the City’s sewer infrastructure. The SE Alder Pump Station Upgrade Project will improve reliability, increase pumping capacity and help prevent sewage releases to protect public health, water quality and the environment. For more information about that construction scheduled to begin in August 2017, visit www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/AlderPS.
Environmental Services is also planning repairs to an aging sewer line in poor condition along SE 3rd Avenue south of SE Alder Street. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2017 or in 2018. For more information about that location, visit www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/citywide.
