Environmental Services continues construction of upgrades to the Alder Pump Station. The city constructed the pump station at SE Water Avenue and SE Alder Street in 1952. This upgrade project will improve reliability and increase pumping capacity, which will help prevent sewage releases into buildings and streets and combined sewage and stormwater overflows to the Willamette River. For details about the improvements to be made, click here.

Project Map

Construction of upgrades will go through several phases and continue through the summer of 2019. Typical work hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with construction the same hours on Saturday if needed.

The city's contractor is making steady progress on the project.

Work Completed

The city's contractor has completed the following activities:

  • Installation of the bypass pumping system to ensure uninterrupted sewer service throughout the construction of upgrades to the pump station
  • Removal of all mechanical and electrical equipment from the existing pump station
  • Demolition of the pump station both above and below ground.
  • Installation of micropiles and pile caps to construct the foundation for the new pump station
  • Construction of the new foundation for the pump station about 30 feet below ground

Upcoming Activities

Current and upcoming work includes the following:

  • This week, continue to drill dowels and inject epoxy in the below-grade circular pump station caisson to accommodate the new submersible pumps that will replace the existing wet well/dry pit style pumping station
  • This week, pour the valve vault, the north wall, and the concrete slab for the below-grade caisson structure
  • In early June, begin forming and pouring the interior walls of the caisson structure
  • Also in June, form and pour the concrete slab on grade for the control building that will house new mechanical and electrical equipment needed for the pump station

Future Activities

The following work will occur at future dates to be determined:

  • Construct the new pump station within the below-grade caisson structure
  • Construct the new above-grade control building
  • Coordinate with PGE to relocate an existing power pole and install a new one
  • Construct a new driveway with access from both SE Water Avenue and SE Alder Street
  • Install security fencing with gates at each end of the new driveway
  • Install screen walls, retaining walls, and a loading dock area
  • Construct an ecoroof and stormwater facility incorporated into a ramp structure
  • Install a new, standby diesel-engine generator
  • Upgrade the pump station's exterior appearance
