City of Portland Environmental Services invites high school students entering 11th or 12th grade (2017-18 school year) and 2017 high school graduates to apply for one of eight internship opportunities with the bureau. The student cohort will participate in an 8-week paid internship that could include office work, field work, trainings, and professional development. It is a great opportunity to learn more about careers in the fields of natural resources, environmental sciences, watershed services, pollution prevention, stormwater, wastewater and public service.
Through this internship program, we hope to empower students to become tomorrow’s decision-makers and advocates for the environmental health of their communities. We encourage students of all races, ethnicities, genders and abilities to apply.
Students are matched with one Environmental Services mentor for 4 weeks from June 26 to mid-July and a second Environmental Services mentor for 4 weeks from mid-July through August 18. Students are matched with mentors based on the student’s areas of interest. The internship provides students with an opportunity to tour City facilities, learn about city government, develop some entry-level work skills in the office and field, and to gain knowledge about a range of career options in environmental fields. The internship pay is $10 an hour.
While working with their mentors, students will learn about career paths, field data collection and/or office work. Students will be able to develop or improve skills in public speaking; resume development; interviewing; and software programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Depending on placement, interns may also learn specialty software programs such as GIS or database management.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2017. You can apply online, by email or by mail.
