Construction has begun on a project to replace and upsize 562 feet of sewer pipe in the Kerns neighborhood. The pipes in this neighborhood are too small for current sewer and stormwater flows. This project will also build greenstreet facilities to help manage stormwater before it enters the combined sewer system. In addition, this project will provide additional capacity to the system in anticipation of the upcoming Earl Blumenauer Pedestrian and Bicycle bridge that is being designed and built by PBOT. This project will help protect public health and our environment by helping to control flooding risks and reducing the possibility of sewer backups and sewage releases to homes, businesses, and streets.
Construction activities have begun. The work will be phased, so that bridge construction does not overlap with sewer construction. The contractor hired by PBOT will be constructing both the sewer and stormwater portion of the project, as well as the bridge. For information on the schedule and design of the project, please visit PBOT's project webpage.
The contractor will notify all adjacent properties 5-10 days in advance of work beginning on a specific block. All bridge and sewer construction work is expected to finish in early 2021.
