Environmental Services is continuing to design a project in the Sunnyside neighborhood to install, replace, and upsize approximately 8,880 feet of public sewer pipes. Environmental Services is also proposing to construct 25 green street planters to manage stormwater runoff from streets, roofs and parking lots. The sewer and stormwater improvements will increase sewer capacity, manage stormwater more naturally, and reduce the risks of street flooding and sewage releases to homes, businesses and streets..
Construction is not anticipated to begin before spring 2021.
In the next few weeks, city crews will conduct a simple excavation process to drill holes and remove debris from proposed construction areas in order to locate utilities and determine other underground conditions. What the engineers learn from this process will help them determine construction locations and methods.
Utility locates are scheduled to occur sometime in November and December between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Work crews will drill eight-inch wide holes in street pavement and unpaved public right-of-way areas at approximately eight locations (see map above). Crews will fill the holes immediately after the drilling is completed. There may be brief periods of noise, dust and mild vibration during drilling.
A public meeting occurred in May of 2019. During this meeting and in the months since, we have received many comments and feedback from neighbors and property owners regarding the project. Specifically, we have worked with many adjacent property owners regarding the green street planters, adjusting the designs, removing one planter from SE Main and 29th, working on planting plans, and tree and plant selections. Work continues with sewer pipe design and working with property owners with nonconforming sewers.
Construction for the Sunnyside South Green Street and Sewer Project isn’t anticipated to begin until spring 2021. Another public meeting will be scheduled for after the first of the year and a presentation to the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association will be on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 7:00 pm, at Southeast Uplift, 3534 SE Main Street.
