Environmental Services is investigating a 350-foot section of sewer pipe that was installed in SW Terwilliger Boulevard in 2017. The section located west of SW Northgate Ave (east of Powers Court and west of Castleridge Lane) is not operating according to bureau standards. As a result, the pipe needs additional cleaning and maintenance every two months. This is much more often than we would typically expect maintenance to occur. We suspect that it may be due to a mix of very soft soils and high ground water at this location causing the pipe to sag, which slows or prohibits sewage from moving through the pipe. Sewer service will continue without interruption to customers in the area.
The current recommendation is to replace the 350-foot section of pipe several feet to the south of the current pipe. The replacement will be much more cost-effective and will help protect water quality, public health, and the environment.
BES employees and contractors will be in the area taking soil samples and investigating ground conditions over the next several weeks. That information will help us finalize the design and method of construction. Currently, we estimate that construction could begin in August, when ground water conditions are at the lowest, and take several months.
The pipe replacement later this summer, will likely require closing SW Terwilliger Boulevard to motor vehicles from the project area to Highway 43. Access for cyclists and pedestrians will be maintained.
