The City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services is continuing our work to repair and replace critical sewer and stormwater infrastructure. Environmental Services will continue to provide information and updates on construction schedules and activities during the COVID-19 emergency.
Updated June 3, 2020
Environmental Services – your sewer and stormwater utility – is designing a project to repair 760 feet of large diameter sewer pipe under Southwest Macadam Avenue between Sweeney Street and Mitchell Street.
Taking these actions now will help protect the public and the environment by reducing the possibility of costly breaks, leaks, blockages and sewage releases to buildings, streets, streams, and rivers.
Design began in spring 2019 and is expected to be complete by in early 2021. Construction is expected to occur in 2023 and take about three to five months to complete.
Over the summer and fall of 2020, work crews will be in the area periodically to research and investigate site conditions. Expected activities include marking the location of sewer pipes and underground utilities with temporary paint, surveying the land, and collecting soil samples. Information gathered will help determine the repair locations, select construction methods, and minimize construction impacts on residents and businesses.
Aboveground construction activities will be concentrated at existing maintenance access holes along Macadam Boulevard.
Environmental Services will work directly with the community throughout the course of the project. Community outreach staff will listen to your suggestions and respond to your concerns. We encourage you to:
In the event of a sewer backup or basement flooding, call the Maintenance hotline immediately at 503-823-1700. It is staffed all hours and all days, 24/7.
