The City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services is continuing our work to repair and replace critical sewer and stormwater infrastructure. Environmental Services will continue to provide information and updates on construction schedules and activities during the COVID-19 emergency.
Environmental Services – your sewer and stormwater services provider – is working with the Bureau of Technology Services to install an underground fiber optic communications network between the Portsmouth Shaft on N. Willamette Boulevard and the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant. This new fiber optic system will allow real time communications with remote equipment, so staff do not need to travel in the event of an earthquake, when roads, bridges, etc. are likely to be damaged.
Crews will install the underground fiber optic cable through approximately 17 shallow access pits that will be excavated along the alignment. Work will be from 7am to 6pm, Monday through Fridays, and some Saturdays starting the last week of May until the end of July 2020.
The Peninsula Trail will be periodically closed between May 25 through July 31, 2020 due to the fiber optic installation and open pit work. Crews intend to close the trail in sections, approximately two to three weeks at a time. Sections to close will be from:
When one section of trail is closed, it will be closed all hours for safety reasons, while the other two sections will remain open. The schedule is not set on which section will be closed first, but we are open to hearing from the public on the preference of closure sequence (1, 2, 3 or 1, 3, 2, or 3, 2, 1, etc.).
