Sewage release to the Willamette River in downtown Portland

August 9, 2010

A blocked sewer pipe caused a sewage overflow today to the Willamette River between the Hawthorne and Morrison bridges.

A monitor in a sewer outfall pipe on the east side of the Willamette just south of the Morrison Bridge detected the overflow at about 9:26 this morning. The blockage was cleared and the overflow ended at about 10:22 a.m. today.

From the time the overflow was detected until the time it was stopped, an estimated 1,400 gallons of raw sewage overflowed to the river. River users should avoid contact with river water near the Morrison Bridge today and tomorrow because of a higher bacteria level in the water.
