Heavy rains cause sewage releases

December 10, 2010

Heavy rain filled some sewers to capacity in several parts of Portland on Thursday, causing sewage overflows from some manholes and from Portland’s combined sewer system. More heavy rain is forecast this weekend. The public should avoid contact with rivers and streams and all flood water because the water may be contaminated with bacteria.

  • A manhole near SW 21st Avenue and SW Dewitt Street overflowed to Fanno Creek yesterday afternoon.
  • A manhole at the Tryon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant near Lake Oswego overflowed to Tryon Creek at about 6:00 p.m. yesterday near the creek’s confluence with the Willamette River.
  • Portland’s West Side Big Pipe overflowed to the Willamette River at the Ankeny Pump Station in Waterfront Park at about 6:00 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m. yesterday.
  • Portland’s combined sewer system overflowed yesterday on the east side of the Willamette River.

Combined sewer overflow warning signs are posted at public access points on the Willamette River.

People can report flooded streets, overflowing manholes and other sewer problems 24 hours a day by calling 503-823-1700.

Heavy rains cause sewage release to Fanno Creek

December 28, 2010

A sewer line filled to capacity by heavy rain overflowed today to Fanno Creek in southwest Portland. Sewer overflowed through a manhole near the intersection of SW 25th Avenue and Dewitt Street, about one block north of Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

Maintenance crews responding to the overflow posted sewage warning signs at the site. People should avoid contact with the water in Fanno Creek downstream of SW 25th and Beaverton-Hillsdale today and tomorrow because of elevated bacteria levels in the creek.

People can report flooded streets, overflowing manholes and other sewer problems 24 hours a day by calling 503-823-1700.
