Tacoma Culvert Replacement Project (complete)
Environmental Services and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers completed work on the SE Tacoma Street Culvert Replacement Project in summer 2013. The old four-foot wide culvert (top right photo) restricted fish passage, impeded water flow, and contributed to localized flooding and erosion. The new, 14-foot wide culvert (bottom right photo) improves fish passage and stream flow.
The contractor completed the culvert work in two phases while maintaining traffic in both directions on SE Tacoma during construction. Travel lane widths were reduced and shifted to one side of the street, while half of the culvert was constructed on the other.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Portland shared the costs fo the $880,000 project. Federal funding is authorized under Section 206 of the Water Resources Development Act.
