Park and Ride Swales help protect Tryon Creek

Environmental Services teamed up with the Oregon Department of Transportation and TriMet to retrofit the parking lot at the TriMet transit park and ride, on Barbur Boulevard and Capitol Highway.  The project was completed this spring.  Here are some before and after photos:

The park and ride is at the headwaters of Tryon Creek and has a substantial footprint of impervious area.  Heavy car traffic brings in pollution from the nearby streets.  These new swales capture and treat stormwater and decrease peak flows of runoff from the parking lot. This helps decrease stream erosion and protect water quality and fish habitat.
