Beaverton Hillsdale Highway Water Quality Improvement Project

Updated April 13, 2017

Environmental Services will begin construction this summer along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway to improve water quality and stream health in Fanno Creek. Work will take place in phases at various locations between SW Sunset Boulevard and the Portland city limits at SW 65th Avenue (see map). When it rains, stormwater runs off Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and flows to storm drains and pipes into Fanno Creek. Untreated stormwater runoff carries oil, dirt and other pollutants directly into the creek. This project will improve local and downstream water quality in Fanno Creek.

In the first phase of construction, Environmental Services will work at one location within the project area to install underground vaults and above ground green street planters to collect and filter stormwater before it flows into Fanno Creek(see map, below). This pilot project will test the effectiveness and long-term maintenance needs of the filter vaults. Future construction phases will include installing additional filters and green street planters at other points along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

Next Steps

Environmental Services is working with the Portland Bureau of Transportation and neighborhood groups on project design. We will continue to provide updates and give the public opportunities to comment as project design continues. Check back here for more information as the project moves through the design stage toward construction.
