Our friends at East Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation District are offering free fall workshops on naturescaping, rain gardens, and site planning. There are plenty to choose from and they are all listed on the EMSWCD registration page. Click on a workshop name or the "Register Now" button to sign up.
You can also request a workshop in your neighborhood. Click here to learn more or call Katie at 503-935-5368.
Rain gardens and naturescaping are great tools that can help homeowners manage stormwater on their own property, which can help shave a few dollars off your stormwater fees. These are great classes, and they're FREE, so find the class that's right for you and sign up now!

I recently attended a really informative class at East Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation about weed identification, where I learned that the Tree of Heaven is invasive and destructive to beneficial plants. Our street has two large Tree of Heaven street trees that are universally despised by the home-owners and my neighbors. One neighbor has tried to grow plants that died and was told by Backyard Habitat it is because Tree of Heaven seedings grow on the other side of her fence. Both the large trees are split, and probably weakened but are very large.Seedlings are popping up all over, and the street is often littered with seeds making City street-cleaning unproductive. I promised the home owners I would look into what to do about them. Help!! What do you suggest to get these trees removed and replaced? Would someone in your office be willing to vouch for their removal? Thank you!

Hi Maryann,
Thanks for contacting the City Green Blog. Your questions can all be addressed by calling the City of Portland Urban Forestry program. You'll want to visit their website for resources about tree problems (https://www.portlandoregon.gov/trees/) and call 503-823-8733 to speak with someone directly.
Good luck!

We are in the process of trying to spin up workshops like this in our local government here in Texas. I wonder what resources you have that could help people like us who are not experienced in this type of presentation model? These workshops you guys have put on seem to be truly inspiring!
