Sewer repairs have closed a lane of traffic at the intersection of SE 7th Avenue and SE Alder Street. A temporary sewer bypass system installed on the street surface is reducing traffic to one lane in each direction 24 hours a day for the next several days.
All vehicles are able to pass through the intersection using one lane in each direction. Drivers and bicycle riders should expect delays.
The work is part of a project that closed the intersection of SE 6th and Alder in mid-September to install an underground sewage vault. The vault will store sewage and stormwater during heavy rain storms. The temporary bypass system will divert sewer flows while the work is underway.
The project will improve the sewer system, help reduce sewer overflows to the Willamette River and help prevent basement backups.
The Bureau of Environmental Services works with Portland residents and businesses to protect water quality, public health, and the environment through wastewater collection and treatment, sewer construction and maintenance, stormwater management, and stream and watershed restoration.
