More Fish, Less Flooding!

In April, we were honored to join with Commissioner Nick Fish and the Lents community to celebrate the completion of the Foster Floodplain Natural Area. We also celebrated Portland’s selection as the North American host for the United Nation’s 2013 World Environment Day.

Environmental Services and Portland Parks & Recreation were proud to partner with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, the Lents neighborhood, and other local community groups to restore the Foster Floodplain Natural Area. The goal was to reduce effects from regular flooding along Johnson Creek, improve the creek’s water quality, and enhance fish and wildlife habitat.

This is one of the many ways we are using cost-effective natural solutions to manage stormwater. The additional community dividend: a treasured place for East Portland families to relax, walk the trail, and watch wildlife.

Please take a moment to watch the video (below) commemorating the event, and to learn more about how this project is already reducing flooding and bringing salmon back to Lents.

If you have any questions about the Foster Floodplain Natural Area, please contact Marie Walkiewicz at (503) 823-6199 or Marie.Walkiewicz@portlandoregon.gov.
