Jade District Street Tree Planting Project, 2017-2018

Thank you for your interest in tree planting!Jade District logo

The Environmental Services Tree Program is currently taking sign-ups for commercial, industrial, and multi-family residential properties in the Jade District that may have room for street trees. While any property may be eligible, the program will prioritize planting in the Jade District as part of our commitment to the Jade Greening collaboration. Residents living in houses or duplexes who are interested in tree planting are encouraged to sign-up with Friends of Trees. If you rent, please talk to your landlord first!

Our tree planting offer includes planting trees in existing planting strips, as well as creating new concrete cut-outs where space allows. Street trees can be planted on frontages with or without curbs and sidewalks.

For the first three summers, all trees planted will be watered by a City contractor. In return, the property owner must assume the long-term care and stewardship of all trees planted. Property owner permission is required for all sign-ups.

Industrial, commercial, and multi-family residential properties present unique challenges for tree planting. The need for vehicle clearance, sight lines, and pedestrian circulation all influence where trees may be planted safely. A City inspector will mark all planting locations prior to planting, taking these factors into consideration. An on-site consultation following your inspection is available upon request.

There are many reasons you might want to consider tree planting for your commercial, industrial, or multi-family property. Trees are an important part of the City’s stormwater management system because they intercept rain water and reduce polluted runoff to rivers and streams. Trees also produce oxygen and help filter pollutants out of the air, creating healthier conditions for the people who live and work in the Jade District. To learn more about the benefits of urban trees, visit our Benefits of Urban Trees resource page.

Please note that we cannot plant trees that are required as part of a private development permit.

Tree Planting

Tree planting coincides with the cool, wet months. We plan to plant approximately 500 trees city-wide this coming season.  Because we will plant so many trees, we cannot give an exact date and time when a specific property will be planted. Concrete cuts will be made in advance of tree planting.

TBD

As always, please feel free to contact us by phone (503-823-2255) or email (itreepdx@portlandoregon.gov) if you have additional questions during this process.
