Emergency Repair Completed
City Maintenance crews have completed the emergency sewer repair in SW Yamhill Street between SW 6th and Broadway that began a week ago. The repair removed a blockage in the 106-year-old public sewer pipe, cleared roots and debris from the pipe, installed a cleanout for future maintenance access, and restored the pipe. Permanent pavement and brickwork restoration will take place at a later date, to be determined.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we conducted this important emergency repair.
Future Downtown-Old Town Sewer Improvements
Environmental Services continues to plan, design, and construct sewer improvement projects in the downtown core, including urgent and emergency repairs as needed. In case of a sewer backup or basement flooding emergency, contact City Maintenance at 503-823-1700. The hotline is staffed all hours and all days.
The pipe that was repaired is in SW Yamhill Street between SW 6th Avenue and SW Broadway Street.
Crews began working at this location on Friday, October 19, and completed the repair on Thursday, October 25, working from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day.
Because several utility lines run underground over the top of the sewer pipe, it was challenging for crews to excavate around the utilities and access the pipe to repair it. Special shoring had to be engineered and squeezed into a narrow gap at the bottom of the excavated hole. The shoring helped crews get to the sewer pipe, repair it, and protect the other utilities around it during their work.
