1) How and when did your employment journey begin with the City of Portland?
I started working at BES in September 2017. My husband and I moved to Portland two years ago purely because we loved the city and wanted to settle down and raise a family here. I have always worked in the environmental field and wanted to focus on the public sector, especially for “a city that works.” Through an acquittance, I reached out to someone who worked at BES for an informational interview. One person led to another, and I met with seven people at BES before finding my current position. Every single people talked to was genuine, intelligent, and eager to help. They have worked at the city between 5 and 20+ years and still love it. That says a lot about a work place. So far, all the good things they told me about working here have all turned out to be true!
2) What is your current role?
Community Outreach Representative
3) Name one thing that you enjoy most or look forward to about your job?
My team, as well as other people I have worked with in the City, such as the engineers, landscape architects, scientists, construction crews, etc. They are here because we care about the work and value public service. Everyone has been collaborative and willing to work together to solve problems.
4) What is one advice or tip would you give to those seeking employment with the City?
I recommend reaching out to current employees for informational interviews. Find out where and how your skillsets can fit into the City, what they like (and don’t like) about their work, what they are looking for in an employee, etc. You’ll find that most people are quite happy to help.
