About Us

For over three decades the City of Portland has been working on clean energy policies and programs that have helped our community conserve energy and reduce climate emissions, starting with the City’s first Energy Policy in 1979. These efforts were originally led by the Portland Energy Office, which later evolved into the Office of Sustainable Development, now known as the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS).

Today the City’s climate protection efforts are guided by the 2009 City of Portland / Multnomah County Climate Action Plan . Developed by BPS, this report calls for an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and lists nearly 100 specific actions to steer our region toward this goal. Many of the plan’s objectives and actions map directly to the work of BPS’ Clean Energy team, which design and implement energy efficiency, renewable energy and neighborhood-scale programs that reduce carbon emissions, create jobs and enhance the livability of our City.
