Solar Forward

  • Solar Forward team at their first energy event at Ecotrust.

Solar Forward was a pilot effort led by the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability to offer Portlanders a way to help fund the development of new, local renewable energy systems.

The pilot resulted in three ten-kilowatt solar electric systems (30 kilowatts total) installed on important community buildings:

  • Southwest Community Center (owned by Portland Parks and Recreation)
  • Oliver P. Lent Elementary School (owned by Portland Public Schools)
  • Ortiz Center futsal court (owned by Hacienda Community Development Corporation)

Experience gained from this crowdfunding pilot has helped the City inform state public policy that would make it possible for true community-shared solar projects to become reality. One of the attributes of community-shared solar that distinguishes it from other community-based energy programs, like Solar Forward and Solarize, is the return of benefits, in the form of bill credits, to participating customers.
