In 2015, Portland City Council unanimously reaffirmed its commitment to a set of Sustainability Principles and Objectives by updating a policy framework first created in 1994. As a result, City staff continue to work collaboratively by reducing waste, water, toxins and energy consumption within city-owned buildings and infrastructure. They also promote sustainable operations by purchasing low-carbon fuels, renewable energy, ecoroofs and more.
Ten principles that guide decisionmaking, nine objectives that measure and report progress.
Sometimes, specific policies are required to address Sustainable City Government principles and objectives.
See the local government operations chapter (page 124) for 21 actions already underway.
In 2014, the City of Portland and Multnomah County adopted the first Climate Change Preparation Strategy, now in implementation phase.
