Ode to Roses Evening Exterior
Kevin Cavenaugh purchased the site that previously hosted Rose’s Famous 24 Flavors ice cream shop driven by two primary goals: prevent a fast food chain restaurant from taking over the site and renew a once vital component of the Beaumont Wilshire neighborhood’s urban fabric. As both a designer with Fletcher Farr Ayotte and neighborhood resident, Kevin purchased the property for "way too much" and took on the role of developer for the first time. In his new role, Kevin was faced with the challenge of balancing his planning and design goals for the site with project financing. Kevin notes, "It quickly became about money". Despite these seeming constraints, Kevin’s simplistic, yet engendering, design of "Ode to Rose’s" significantly reduced the building’s materials and energy demand and will earn the building a LEED Silver rating, all for $72 per square foot. The Ode to Rose’s project demonstrates that sustainable design and construction does not have to translate to higher costs and increased complexity thus affirming the notion that less is indeed more.

Project Highlights:
