On Tuesday May 12, 2009, the Portland Planning Commission voted 7-1 to recommend to City Council that 39th Ave. should be renamed Cesar Chavez Blvd.
After a 45-minute discussion and the vote, the commission discussed a series of recommendations to accompany their approval of the street renaming, including taking a one or two-year hiatus from renaming any other streets in Portland so the community could assess the whole process and perhaps come up wtih a new one that would create less controversy and divisiveness among Portlanders.
A date has not been set yet for the City Council to consider the recommendations.
