Restaurants, grocery stores and other retail vendors have been prohibited from using polystyrene foam (PSF) containers since 1990. PSF is made from oil and is non-biodegradable. Very few recycling opportunities exist and the vast majority of PSF food service containers are disposed in landfills. PSF can also break into pieces and cause problems for marine animals, birds and fish if it ends up in waterways or the ocean.
