Recycling and garbage volumes go up by 25 percent or more over the holidays in the Portland area. While some of this is due to boxes, party leftovers and wrapping paper, the single biggest item that doesn’t belong in the dumpster is a holiday tree. Here are some strategies to keep the collection area of your multifamily property tree-free:
- If possible, designate a special collection area on your property where residents can discard their post-holiday real trees and greenery for compost. Talk with your garbage and recycling company to arrange a pick-up date, or have maintenance staff take them to a drop-off yard debris recycling center.
- Another option is to encourage residents to take trees to a local charitable collection event, or consider partnering with a community organization (like a local Scout troop) to pick up trees from your community.
- Keep your residents informed: post tree collection and disposal guidelines, together with safety tips to keep trees watered and fresh, and holiday lights off when residents aren’t at home.
To find a drop-off yard debris recycling center or nearby tree collection event, enter your address and "Christmas tree" in Oregon Metro's "Find a Recycler" tool. Or call Metro at 503-234-3000.
Note: these guidelines are specific to managers and owners of multifamily properties with five or more units on a tax-lot. If you are a multifamily resident, please talk with the property manager. If you live in a residential setting (single-family to four-plex), please call the Curbside Hotline at 503-823-7202 or refer to the Curbsider.
