Portlanders are rightly proud of our city’s recycling ethic. We collect paper, metal, glass, and plastic so that they can be turned into new products, saving energy, water, and natural resources along the way. Currently, most of the paper and plastics we collect are sent to manufacturers in China. U.S. recycling firms have recently been informed by China that tighter restrictions are being placed on recyclables shipped to that country, which limits the availability of local recycling options.
