What is Subrogation?

• Subrogation is the right for an insurance company to pursue a third-party that caused an insurance loss to their policy holder (insured). This is done as a means of recovering the amount of the claim paid on behalf of the policy holder for their loss

Since the City of Portland is self-insured, City Risk acts in a similar manner to an insurance company. We will pursue reimbursement of the loss or pursue legal action against the party at fault for the City's property damage. The City will repair the damage and City Risk will collect the money from the at fault party or their insurance.  

City Risk performs this function under the authority of City Code 5.50.
