Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) is the future of public safety answering systems. The technology behind current 9-1-1 has changed little over the past 40 years continuing to rely on “copper wires” even as the rest of us have become increasingly dependent on wireless communication tools. NG9-1-1 will bring 9-1-1 technology into the wireless age while improving service to citizens with functions such as text messaging, video transmissions, geographic optimization, and greater interoperability among responding agencies. NG9-1-1 is also critical to ensuring the full availability of 9-1-1 services to the hearing and speech impaired and to non-English speaking callers.
