30th Anniversary Birthday Celebration

  • 30th Year Neighborhood System Anniversary In 2004 the City and the Neighborhood Associations celebrated 30 years of success!

Celebrating 30 Years of Neighborhood Activism and Involvement - 1974 to 2004

hosted by the 95 Neighborhood Associations of Portland

2004 marked the 30th Anniversary of the City of Portland's recognition of Neighborhood Associations.

The Neighborhood Associations of Portland put together a celebration of all the things Neighborhood Associations do throughout every year of service.  They used this 30th Anniversary to remind Portland residents and elected officials of the unique and valuable services provided by Neighborhood Associations and the scope of the things they do.

The entire year will be used to call attention to what Neighborhood Associations do by:
  • Individual Neighborhood Association Chairs report to City Council on their accomplishments and contributions to community building in Portland.
  • Several Rose Festival sanctioned events including:
    • 30th Anniversary Birthday Party celebration with cake cutting and participation by Mayor Katz and citizens involved in Neighborhood Associations during the past 30 years.
    • Elementary School banner contest for Junior Parade joining schools and neighborhoods.
    • Neighborhood Association community float in Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, June 12, 2004.
  • Compilation of a history of Neighborhood Associations and how they have developed over the years.
  • Monthly themes to demonstrate Neighborhood Association partnerships and support.
  • Logo displays on banners, flyers, neighborhood event materials, and various websites.
  • Regular stories and information in various newspapers, community, and neighborhood newsletters.
  • A 30th Anniversary web page with info on neighborhood events related to the birthday celebration.
  • Direct link from City home page to Neighborhood Association and/or Coalition area events and activitiy schedules as well as other information about 30 year history.
  • A city-wide rose planting by each Neighborhood Association.
  • Joint activities with various civic and other organizations throughout the year.
The theme of the year of celebration will build on what Neighborhood Associations already do, the real value they provide the City, and how the thousands of Neighborhood Association volunteers use their skills, interests, and time to significantly contribute to the desirability of living in Portland, Oregon.
