A brief description of the event written by Saara Hirsi and Abdi Mohamed
Disability refugee awareness event was about sharing experiences and creating networks within the disability community. Our goals were for refugees with disabilities to overcome isolation, meet others in the community and to find resources. The participants were members from different backgrounds, and we shared our experience and stories.
For example, there were immigrant and refugees from the disability community, parents who have children with disabilities, individuals, and organization that work with the disability community. People had the opportunity to learn from each other and exchange information. Even though we have different backgrounds, we also share common similarities.
Disability culture is rich and beautiful!
One individual said, “I am very happy to know these resources exist and to meet different people who care to learn about the disabled refugee community”. Participants of the project were excited to continue building relationships.
