The City of Portland Announces the 2019 Spirit of Portland Awards Recipients

PORTLAND, OR–The Mayor and City of Portland Commissioners invite you to join them in honoring the 35th Annual Spirit of Portland Award recipients.  This year’s award theme is “35 years on the road to 2035 growth, for a more prosperous, equitable, healthier, and resilient city.”

This year is the 35th Anniversary of the Spirit of Portland Awards, and so we have chosen the theme to be associated with the 2035 Comprehensive Plan for the City of Portland. The plan’s five principles guide the categories for nominations this year.

  • Economic Prosperity: ONABEM Oregon Native American Business Enterprise Network
  • Human Health: Urban League Health Department
  • Environmental Health, Sandy Diedrich Stewardship: Columbia Land Trust

  • Commissioner Amanda Fritz: Wm. Steven Humphrey, Portland Mercury Editor-in-Chief; and Oregon Public Broadcasting Senior Management Team
  • Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty: Kaia Sand from Street Roots
  • Mayor Ted Wheeler: Keanon Lowe, Parkrose High School football and track coach

"Since its inception in 1985, the Spirit of Portland Awards has recognized activists, community advocates, and a wide range of committed individuals who serve to advance the Portland community.  Awardees embody our city’s culture, goals, and an overarching dedication to enriching the lives of their fellow Portlanders."                                      —Chloe Eudaly, Commissioner

Spirit of Portland Award recipients are chosen by a selection committee composed of representatives from the Mayor’s and City Commissioners’ offices, the Office of Community & Civic Life, community leaders, and previous Spirit of Portland winners.
